WHO WE ARE and WHAT WE DO
At the Denver Language School, G/T programming includes 2 full time GT Coordinators in addition to several teachers being internally certified within DPS.
The huge proportion of gifted and magnet eligible students at DLS represents the rigor and high expectations for all students across all grade levels. Advanced Learning Plans are created for all G/T identified students, with affective goals for the students holding as much weight as the achievement goals. Elementary students are given cluster grouping within their grade and language program. Pull-out programs for weekly language and math enrichment align with curriculum and standards and are open to all students that show mastery and proficiency in each subject. In addition to academic enrichment, G/T, Magnet Eligible, and Talent Pool students attend a bi-weekly project based learning program which includes creativity, critical thinking, and social-emotional support elements. Middle school teachers recognize the learning differences in gifted students and design lessons and projects that enhance creativity and complexity. Middle school students are given enrichment opportunities within their classes, mentoring with their Student Action Projects (SAPs), as well as weekly S/EL sessions.
The focus for this year is to broaden the parameters for enrichment and to identify traditionally underrepresented students by using multiple forms of data to increase the range of students in the talent pool. This will be done by providing teachers with resources in alternative methods of assessment (including the use of Bloom’s Taxonomy within the classroom instruction to identify critical thinking skills) and developing students’ body of evidence.
The G/T Coordinator also provides monthly seminars for parents and GT/Magnet Eligible/Talent Pool students to help address unique parenting difficulties and to facilitate discussions and activities through a G/T lens.
